So what we have here are images of the Sidekick Slide (thanks Engadget) and what we believe is the Sidekick Zante, also known at the Motorola Q700. So while all these new devices and what about the Sidekick X and the Sidekick 4? We don't know just yet, but for now it appears there are two new Sidekicks on their way and they stem from a partnership Danger has established with Motorola (didn't we mention that 6 months ago?) A while back, there was rumor of a Sidekick RAZR coming, my guess is this is what people were talking about. Either way, get excited kids because these form factors look really slick.

Some more pictures of the Sidekick ID have popped up in recent weeks and we are supposed to have access to it on April 18th. Is it a new product? Is it a rehashed product? Well its not the Sidekick 3 and I wouldn't exactly call it a Sidekick 4 but its coming just the same and the questions are:

1) Who is going to buy it?
2) Does Danger know that its probably time to move on to a higher resolution screen for 2007?
3) What part of the world buys phones in 'giggly' blue, fuchsia and 'turn off the neon' yellow?
4) Is this the final death blow (apologies to Mortal Kombat) to Danger Inc?

First Pics of the Sidekick ID

The Sidekick ID has finally been found in the wild. T-Mobile is set to release a trimmed down version of the Sidekick, named the Sidekick ID. The Sidekick ID (SKiD) is lacking many features of the Sidekick 3, but what it lacks in features, it makes up for in price. It's estimated to be 1/2 the cost of the SK3, starting at $99 with 2 year service agreement. It still has instant messaging (AIM, Yahoo!, and MSN), email, web browsing, and the very familiar Sidekick interface. Features cut include Bluetooth, MP3 Player, digital camera, and a microSD slot. Expect to see it in June.

A Gartner report came out today ranking the top PDA sellers.

And guess what they said?

"Sharp ranked fifth in 2006 with 1,438,218 million PDAs shipped.
Approximately 1.1 million of these were the Sidekick,
primarily marketed by T-Mobile.

However, Sharp's Linux PDAs fared poorly,
with fewer than 30,000 shipped in 2006."

I have to imagine most of these were Sidekick 3s right?
I mean I guess some of them were Sidekick IIs,

The FCC has approved a Sharp device going by the model number PV150 that we understand is a new form factor Sidekick that will launch in the Spring with a great low end price: free! How will it be free you ask? The carrier will subsidize the price of the phone and make up the money with the data plan required to take advantage of the Sidekick's messaging, email and web surfing features. What is the catch? This version will not have bluetooth. It will however be a tri-band (850/1800/1900) GSM device. It looks like Danger is trying to build its user base. Word from T-Mobile is lots of people buying the Sidekick 3, but lots of people are turning it off too and moving away from the platform. Maybe this is a defensive move against the forthcoming iPhone from Apple and an attempt to build a subscriber base.

New Sidekick Platform Details on October 12th

This isn't new, but I wanted to post it because we are less than 2 weeks away from the answer. Some FCC documents for a Danger (the Sidekick manufacturer) device dated September 5, 2006. The question is, what’s with the frequencies?

The new device operates at 850/1800/1900 MHz frequencies, whereas the Sidekick 3 operates at 900/1800/1900 MHz. Could it be a Sidekick Platform for Cingular, which operates at 850, instead of T-Mobile, which does not. Could it be a Motorola handset for Cingular as I have mentioned? Or, it could just be a new version of the Sidekick which also works with the 850 band overseas?

Overheard In Palo Alto: Sidekick Operating System Going to Motorola

Danger, who makes our little Sidekick series of devices is not really a hardware company. They are a software company and they have been dating company's like Sharp and UT Starcom to get the Sidekick II and Sidekick 3 up and running and built. Well I heard yesterday that the next girl to say yes to a Danger hook up is Motorola, that nice little American company that has turned their handset business around and is actually cool again. Wouldn't that be great to see a nice sleek Motorola designed handset running the Danger OS? This would explain the talk of a RAZR version of the Sidekick that people have been talking about for over a year now. There has reportedly been a super thin, or razor-like version of the Sidekick in the works for 18 months. Today's students don't e-mail as much as they text and IM. Just like with e-mail, texting goes best on a phone with a full QWERTY keyboard – one tap is always better than three. But where e-mail often demands the power of a smartphone, text-happy phones exist in a middle space between basic, voice only devices and the more expensive, highly configurable smartphones. So before heading back to school, it's good idea to consider a more messaging-friendly handset.
But first, a warning for parents. If you intend to buy your kid a text-happy phone, make sure to get an unlimited SMS add-on plan. Otherwise, your wallet could literally ignite.
Almost all phones can do SMS texting, whether to other cell-phones or to e-mail addresses. Instant messaging, on the other hand, isn't quite as universal – not only do you have to make sure your phone supports the IM service you prefer, you'll probably need to rearrange your AOL buddy list because of an obnoxious bug/feature in most mobile AIM clients that limits them to displaying your "Mobile" category only. One way to get around this is to manually move your contacts into your AIM Mobile folder on the PC. Also remember that on many devices, IMs are charged as text messages – so get that unlimited SMS plan!
The most basic text-centric phone is the Kyocera Switchback KX21, available on the prepaid Virgin Mobile carrier. With its tween-friendly design and inability to run up a monthly bill, it's a great introduction to the world of SMS and AIM for younger kids. Users of other IM systems will be left out in the cold, unfortunately.
For older teens, the Sidekick 3 has a subculture all its own. I'm not all that thrilled with the new Sidekick – I feel you might as well get a Sidekick 2 and save your money – but the gadget has a coolness factor which teens seem to demand. Texting actually comes secondary to the Sidelick's great IM client and push e-mail capabilities.
If you're a Verizon family, the LG VX9800 – now sold as "The V" – is the best texting choice. Not only does it flip open to reveal a keyboard, it gets great reception, has a high-quality 1.3MP camera, and plays MP3s through some pretty powerful speakers. It may not handle e-mail that well, but it's a real whiz at SMS, and supports AOL, MSN and Yahoo! instant messengers. This being Verizon, you'll have to pay a healthy sum for all of those features, though.
Once you get to college, organization becomes key. From classes to study sessions, and exam dates to parties. There's a lot keep track of. For this a smartphone really comes in handy. But hey, you're still relatively broke. The good news is, Amazon is selling the Palm Treo 650 for $49.99 after rebates – and Sprint's PDA data plans, at $15/month, are the least expensive of any major carrier. Since the Treo is a true smartphone, you have a choice of several IM clients/ The Treo can text, e-mail, play games and keep your complicated life in order; it's not the newest model, but it's a great buy.
Lets not forget the Helio Hero. Though it lacks a QWERTY keyboard, the phone sports a customized MySpace client. While you can hit MySpace on the Sidekick or Treo, it's not as quick or as slickly done as it is on the Hero. For teens who live their lives on this social-networking site, that will sell them on the chunky black phone, which also has a 2-megapixel camera to capture treasured or embarrassing moments.

Sure, this is the Sidekick 3 blog, but we all love cool handhelds. I have a PSP, several Ipods, a GBA and a DS and and the new DS Lite. The question is, do I want a Sony MyLo? Would I use it? Would you? Let me know your thoughts, seem to me that it's too dependant on wifi to take seriously, but I think it looks slick and if the screen is as good as a PSP, I may have to pick one up. The real question is performance though...will I use it daily? Will I live on it? Thoughts?

Here is Directions (Thanks to Enjoi and others for clarifying): Plug in your USB cord from your Sidekick to your Computer Go to the drive where your Sidekick folders are Make a new folder called "Themes" (without the quoutes) Then inside that folder make a new folder with the theme name you want to appear on the sidekick Add the picture you want. make sure its a .pgn or .jpg file. also size 240X138 Add the 2nd pic you want for the sub catagory Open Windows "Notepad" or any other Text Editing Program and create a new file to include the following: # ThemeName # string Name(en_US) ThemeName bitmap ring-background FileNumberOne.png bitmap ring-folder-background FileNumberTwo.png Save the file as "theme.txt" into the folder you created above inside the theme folder Example file:

The Next Generation's Take on the New Sidekick

Last week's e-mail column, regarding my temptation to "film" my daughter's dance recital using my still camera (despite a "no camcorders" rule intended to spur sales of the dance school's own DVD), generated over 400 messages in my In box and the Comments area at nytimes.com/pogue. They ranged from "Film away, dude -- stick it to the man!" to "What part of 'no filming' don't you understand?"

As usual, I was blown away by your articulate, passionate, creative approaches to the topic.

But you can (and should) read those comments on your own. Today's topic is, instead, the Sidekick 3.

And today's columnist isn't me. It's Bart Stein, a 19-year-old Brown sophomore who e-mailed me last spring and asked if I could use a summer intern. I sure could, and the deal has worked out great for both of us.

One day, unannounced, Bart e-mailed me his own take on the Sidekick 3--and it's good enough, accurate enough and, after editing, Pogueish enough that I thought it could stand on its own. It's therefore my pleasure to introduce you to a member of the next generation of tech reviewers: Bart Stein.

Every hero needs a sidekick, a loyal companion who assists in times of need. Batman had Robin, the Lone Ranger had Tonto; T-Mobile is betting that the hero inside all of us will crave its latest gadget, the Sidekick 3.

It's the successor to T-Mobile's smash-hit cellphone, the Sidekick II, which became a cultural icon for the young and the hip. Legions of 18- to 35-year-olds marched to their local T-Mobile stores, convinced that if the Sidekick II was good enough for Paris Hilton, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg, it was good enough for them.

The original Sidekick, introduced in 2003, boasted a revolutionary design: it's horizontal, with a keyboard hidden behind a 180-degree swivel screen. Cool people everywhere rejoiced; finally, they had the e-mail features of a BlackBerry or Treo without the nerdy stigma.

Now, nearly two years later, the Sidekick 3 makes its debut ($300 for new customers; $30 per month for unlimited Internet, plus a voice plan). There's no revolution occurring here; the Sidekick 3 represents more of an evolution. And that's a good thing, because the fundamental design is still fresh and exciting.

The first thing you notice is the Sidekick's new, grown-up look. With a silver and black finish and an enclosure that, at 0.72 inches thick, is 20 percent thinner than the Sidekick II, the 3 somehow manages to look hipper and more sophisticated at the same time. The tight-jeans crowd should note, however, that it still feels slightly bulky (it's 5.1 inches wide), especially compared to Palm's latest Treo 700p and Motorola's svelte Q smartphone.

But the 3 is bigger for a reason: it accommodates a wide keyboard and large, ergonomic controls. A new trackball replaces the scroll wheel of the Sidekick II (the screen still isn't touch-sensitive), making it faster and easier to navigate the device's screens.

Unfortunately, that screen seems to have been disregarded by the forces of evolution. It's perfectly readable, but it's neither as crisp nor as bright as those of the Treo, the Q or other recent phones.

As before, the Sidekick 3's software is designed so well, you can practically navigate the menus with your eyes closed. There are standard Send and End buttons for making phone calls, and convenient volume controls on the bottom. Even the keyboard shows careful thought, with dedicated keys for numbers, and even a specific key for the @ symbol. After using the Sidekick 3 for ten minutes, you'll wonder why T-Mobile even bothered to print a manual.

The 3's new 1.3-megapixel camera is definitely a step -up from the II, but it has a few shortcomings. The photos are good, not great, and you can't record video. The low-res, not-so-bright screen of the Sidekick 3 will have you racing to your computer to see what the picture you just took really looks like.

The new music player is much better. At the moment, it plays only MP3 and WAV files (T-Mobile claims that additional formats will come soon); still, the player is a nice addition that works very well. Transferring music to the Sidekick 3 is seamless, though slow, over the included USB cable (the Sidekick 3 uses USB 1.1 and not the faster 2.0 version), and the sound is good both through the included headphones or the surprisingly loud, crisp speaker. Thanks to a faster processor, you can listen to music at full volume and take the highest quality picture simultaneously without a hitch.

With the new miniSD card slot, you can store as much as 2 gigabytes of pictures and music on your phone. That should be plenty for most people, although 2-gigabyte memory cards are pricey (about $90).

The Sidekick 3 operates on T-Mobile's new EDGE network, which purports to offer Internet speed that's two or three times as fast as a dial-up network (or a Sidekick II).

T-Mobile, however, might want to borrow Verizon's "Can you hear me now?" guy. Both voice and Internet service seemed spotty in New York City. Make sure you check out your local coverage before you buy (some cities don't even offer EDGE).

Since the Sidekick 3 is aimed at Generation Cool, it makes sense that one of the best features is instant messaging. You can hold up to ten typed conversations simultaneously (over the AIM, Yahoo, or MSN chat networks); synchronized light effects go off when you receive an IM.

There's also Bluetooth for wireless headsets and a new, replaceable battery that promises improved battery life. There are a few nits to pick. You're offered only four canned choices of background "wallpaper" -- a weird limitation for a "cool" device. And there's only one game (Rock and Rocket, the same one as on the original Sidekick).

Otherwise, though, T-Mobile's latest is a trusty companion indeed. And who wouldn't want a sidekick as cool, helpful, and fun as this one?

"I have a Bluetooth headset and I was in the middle of a phone call and was playing around with my Sidekick by accident during the call I hit the play button on the mp3 player but instead of hearing the music through the handset I was hearing music in my Bluetooth! But this was only during the phone calls and it would drown out the other person's voice. It did not work in any other case. I don't know if this has been reported by anyone else. Its obvious that the sidekick 3 is capable of using the Bluetooth headset as a ear phones for the mp3 player... so my question is was this taken out by T-mobile to be used later in the OTA update because the capability is clearly there."

I was in Manhattan today and I popped over to the T-Mobile store in Midtown to see if there was a line of people waiting to buy the Sidekick 3 and you bet there was. They have the area gated off in case things get crazy.

The line was just getting started. A cool guy named Rasheed Grant was the #1 guy. He was rolling with a buddy of his, who is #2 in line and #3 was a guy that looked and acted like Flavor Flav and kept asking about weed. I revealed myself as BSD only as I was walking away.

So if are in New York City tonight, go by and say hi to the guys and bring Rasheed a soda or something because he is a seriously hardcore fan.

I have been checking the stats of late and I have noticed that in addition to the incredible growth of users on the Sidekick 3 blog [over half a million visitors this month], we have seen an international crowd of users growing during the month of June. From Hawaii to Sweden to South America and Africa and all around Asia, we have been getting hits from all over the globe. A spy report came in tonight. This spy says the picture to the right is a Sidekick 3 sample model for Cingular. They didn't say whether or not Cingular had made a decision to carry it, only that it was being reviewed for their network. I don't believe it, but I thought I would put it up here in case anyone could prove that it was indeed a Cingular test Sidekick 3 or confirm that the Hiptop platform was never going to stray from T-Mobile.

The packaging on the Sidekick 3 this time around is a bit more grown up if you ask me. I also like the black and orange manual. I think it looks very good. What is most interesting to me this morning though is the number of people who are saying they aren't going to buy a Sidekick 3. Now I know not everyone is clicking on the poll, but the numbers speak for themselves. I have it set up so a user can't vote twice so it's a pretty accurate read on sentiment. Some people say "why come to this blog if you aren't interested in one?" Well I think that one reason why people have been coming is to get details, pics and to help make a decision. Cell phones today affect a person's lifestyle and their appearance is key, clearly some people are voting that an old-looking washed out screen does not reflect their personal style. I think Danger/Sharp ought to do what Nintendo has done, and plan a brighter, high quality screen to come out in 2007. Call it the Sidekick 3goodscreen. The current poll results (below) show that about 60% of readers will NOT get the Sidekick 3 as is, and the rest will upgarde or change from their current cell phone. That doesn't bode well for Danger.

Surprise, surprise...Engadget makes the same comment on the Sidekick 3 that I made several months ago when I first reviewed it, the Sidekick 3 display is weak. Here is what the said..."There haven't been any major changes in the UI (mainly a few tweaks here and there), and you may or may not like the new keyboard (we liked it, but you'll just have to try it yourself and see), but the biggest disappointment is the display, which is still a paltry 240 x 160 pixels and still looks sorta washed out to our eyes." As I said a while back, this is going to be a challenge for many Sidekick 3 users because it makes the Sidekick 3 feel outdated relative to other new handhelds like the Blackberry, the Motorola Q or any of the Windows Mobile or Symbian smartphones. The Sidekick 3 is unfortunately a "catch up" device in many ways, just getting up to speed with the marketplace. We will cut them some slack because they are a small, private company with one product but the ultimate test is whether or not the marketplace feels their latest product is worth having. Now let's wait and see what users say about the battery life and voice quality of the phone.

No harm here, Video Game stores do this all the time, it's easy for them to hold $25 of yours and then order one for you when it comes out. You are guaranteed to get one, but not necessarily any sooner than if you went to a real T-Mobile store.
