Engadget Agrees...Sidekick 3 Screen DISAPPOINTS!

Surprise, surprise...Engadget makes the same comment on the Sidekick 3 that I made several months ago when I first reviewed it, the Sidekick 3 display is weak. Here is what the said..."There haven't been any major changes in the UI (mainly a few tweaks here and there), and you may or may not like the new keyboard (we liked it, but you'll just have to try it yourself and see), but the biggest disappointment is the display, which is still a paltry 240 x 160 pixels and still looks sorta washed out to our eyes." As I said a while back, this is going to be a challenge for many Sidekick 3 users because it makes the Sidekick 3 feel outdated relative to other new handhelds like the Blackberry, the Motorola Q or any of the Windows Mobile or Symbian smartphones. The Sidekick 3 is unfortunately a "catch up" device in many ways, just getting up to speed with the marketplace. We will cut them some slack because they are a small, private company with one product but the ultimate test is whether or not the marketplace feels their latest product is worth having. Now let's wait and see what users say about the battery life and voice quality of the phone.

Are SK 2 customers going to get a $100 discount like the last time when the Sk 2 came out? Also, is the SK 3 going to have IP-Relay since Iam going deaf?

yes, this is a good question: i don't care so much about getting the "first shot" at a sidekick3 , being a sidekick II owner, I care more about whether I can "trade in" my sidekick II and get some sort of good discount here. As time goes on, I'm sure these details will develop, just post them here if you find out! Thanks. -P

I was hoping that the screen quality was going to better

I'm assuming "No" on the $100 trade in only because the build quality of the sk2 was slightly better than the sk1 and the number of people looking for rebuilt units is likely much lower.

Hopefully the sk3 will have better jump and menu buttons.

do you think they will do a upgrade of the screen quality over the phone in the next few months...I have the SK2 but I was hoping for a better quality screen...I love the upgrades (bluetooth and music player) but they have to improve the screen quality...

i was hoping that wifi was available (although the linked roadmap shows this, UMA, will be available end of 06, probably beginning of 07 now) and/or being able to use your sidekick3's bluetooth capability to use the device as a modem for a computer (laptop). it sounded like additional bluetooth "profiles" may be available in the future in the form of firmware upgrades.

still, the sidekick3 is thinner, lighter, faster (with edge), and more battery life: these are all vast improvements; screen quality improvements will probably come in later revs, its in the roadpath, but this takes alot more time and development. I have no problem with incremental improvements because I don't take for granted all the things that sidekick does well. behind the cartoony facade is an extremely capable communication device with a full concealable keyboard. sidekick is not behind the curve but rather was already ahead of the curve in all the right places.

roadmap: http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/26/sidekick-iii-product-roadmap-revealed/

*notice a year from now it will be even _thinner_ and video. hot damn.

i could care less about screen quality and video or music player right now, although some do.

Well like i heard before, the sidekick will only be a highschool chatting device...they won't invest money in to a teeny bopper device...

We all wished that the screen would have been better. Sharp has not improved. They suck.

It's been out for what, a day and we're already complaining?
How about this time around we enjoy it for at least a week. Then we can start on how the screen sucks and the MDA is superior.
Positive thinking guys, positive thinking.

My hubby has the new Blackberry and I HATE IT! Now I know why I chose the SKII.

sidekick 3 is coming out in december.

It's the same screen as the SK II, big deal, I like it. Clear and easy to read outdoors and works well indoors. Even if you went to higher resolution the fonts would have to be the same size to read them, they'd just be smoother.

You should take a look at the CNet review of the SK3. They talk about the sounds quality I believe.

It takes much longer to navigate a website, and I don't like the auto text feature. I had that on my Nokia a long time back and it's annoying. I have used my hubby's BB and I just don't like it.

I don't care........The sidekick 3 is better than his predecessor(sidekick2) and i think that Sidekick/T-mobile will release another or special sidekick 3 version(boosted).........remember you the plan of T-mobile==>

Well, I will be getting my upgrade on the 28th!!! I want the SK3, I am not a teenager but the SK allows me to combine my phone address book where a cell doesn't. It is a lot user friendly than the blackberry.

t-mobile better not screw me on this and put out a better version in a few months. I think it is user friendly the rate plan is good but the phone service with t-mobile is very shakey
